Antony Gormley: A Unit of Work for Grade 5
In this section you will find the unit outline. Four lesson plans are provided in sequence to implement in the classroom.
Within this unit there are two art appreciation (Exploring and responding) lessons, and two art practice (Creating and making) lessons.
Art Appreciation may be described as follows:
Art appreciation means to explore and examine a piece of artwork to develop a greater understanding of what the artist is trying to portray. It is to gain some insight into the meaning behind the artwork, and the purpose of the artwork, if there is one. It is to interpret and understand artwork, including any cultural, emotional or other underlying meaning. The conceptual framework is a valuable means to interpreting and appreciating art. As an educator, it is important to teach students that appreciating art is not simply liking pretty art, but understanding more about the artwork, artist, subject matter and audience., as well as how these four componenets of art inter-relate.
Art Practice may be described as follows:
Art practice mean the act of creating artwork which has meaning and value, more than purely for aesthetics. It includes using art appreciation to inspire and guide your creative work. As an educator, art practice means to include the making of meaningful art wherever possible in education.
The lessons are planned as follows:
Lesson One is an art practice lesson and introduces the concept and technique of making body casts, as this is a technique integral to Gormley's artwork.
Lesson Two is an art appreciation lesson and introduces Antong Gormley to the students through biographical information, and introduces students to art appreciation in relation to their own casts and Gormle's artwork Critical Mass.
Lesson Three is an art appreciation lesson focussing on Gormley's sculpture Angel of the North.
Lesson Four is an art practice lesson in which students are required to create a sculpture which symbolises 'hope', and is inspired by the Angel of the North.
Provided below are the four lesson plans. The assessment worksheets as part of lessons two and three are provided at the end of the relevant lesson plan.
